The Strategies for Mitigating Antimicrobial Resistance through Education and Research (SMARTER) group uses quantitative and qualitative research methods to better understand and improve antimicrobial use.

Meet Our Team

Led by Passionate Experts

The SMARTER group is a multidisciplinary team composed of clinicians, researchers, and trainees with a wide range of expertise and experience. Our team works to address challenges with antimicrobial use identified as key priorities by key stakeholders.

The SMARTER group is led by Dr. Emily Black who is an Associate Professor and Clinical Pharmacist in the College of Pharmacy at Dalhousie University.

Associate Professor and Clinical Pharmacist in the College of Pharmacy at Dalhousie University

Biography

Dr. Emily Black received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from Dalhousie University, an accredited Canadian Pharmacy Residency through Capital Health and Dalhousie University, and a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the University of British Columbia.  Dr. Black has worked as a clinical pharmacist in a variety of settings in Canada and internationally. Dr. Black is currently employed as an Associate Professor with the College of Pharmacy at Dalhousie University with an active research program that focuses on antimicrobial use and stewardship. In addition, Dr. Black continues to provide direct patient care as a clinical pharmacy specialist with a cross appointment to IWK Health. Dr. Black also has affiliated scientific appointments with the Maritime SPOR Support Unit, NS Health, and IWK Health.
